What can you do with a Master of Social Work (MSW) Degree?

With a MSW you can obtain advanced level positions in a variety of settings including schools; hospitals; home health; non-profit, public, and private social services agencies; and local, state, and federal government.

  • Types of social workers include child and family social workers, school social workers, healthcare social workers, and mental health and substance abuse social workers.
  • Over time, it’s common for MSWs to move into managerial and director positions, such as program manager or executive director.
  • Advocacy is a central component of the social work profession. Social workers advocate on behalf of clients, communities, and underserved populations. Locally, social workers may advocate for increased access to services for clients.
  • Nationally, social workers may work to increase awareness of an issue, such as homelessness, and the unmet needs of those affected. Many MSWs seek public office and serve in local and state governments, as well as in Congress.

Overall employment of social workers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will be stronger in specialized areas, such as mental health services, healthcare, and substance abuse treatment.
