Ignacio Zelaya, Catholic '27, is a Social Work major from New Canaan, CT. He shares why he chose to attend Catholic University and the National Catholic School of Social Service, and what advice he has for prospective students.

Why did you choose to attend Catholic University?

"My brother attended Catholic and I always loved the campus and the community. I also feel like Catholic University has strong educational programs that are curated to my preferences."

Why do you want to be a social worker?

"I grew up in Honduras where there’s a lot of poverty and disparity. I've always felt this calling to help people on a deeper level to be a guide and provide direction to those who need it most. I've always thoughyt about finding a way to give back to my country and I saw social work as the perfect opportunity to learn and understand how I can provide that help to them."

What's been your favorite part of being a student at Catholic University?

"I adore the community here at Catholic. Everyone one is a so kind and so welcoming. We have a very strong and close community. I also like how understanding and supportive the staff is. Everyone here just wants the best for you and wants to help you achieve."

What advice would you give to prospective students?

"Relax. I remember first coming to campus in August and feeling so nervous, knowing I was starting fresh in a new city. Soon enough, I realized that all my worrying was for nothing. You get used to the city very quickly. The metro is easy to use and most places are at a walkable distance. Since Catholic has such a great community it's easy to find your footing here and find your people."
