Robert Scuka, Ph.D., M.S.W., L.C.S.W.-C is Executive Director of the National Institute of Relationship Enhancement^® in Bethesda, MD and a certified member of its training faculty in Child-Centered Play Therapy. He also is author of Relationship Enhancement Therapy: Healing Through Deep Empathy and Intimate Dialogue (Routledge, 2005), and “The Rationale and Principles of Effective Limit Setting in Child-Centered Play Therapy, Filial Therapy and Parenting Education,” in Play Therapy 5.2 (June 2010), 10-14.

Description

Child-Centered Play Therapy is the method of play therapy developed by Virginia Axline, an associate of Carl Rogers. It follows the Client-Centered principle of creating a non-judgmental, emotionally supportive therapeutic atmosphere while also providing clear boundaries that encourage the child to learn emotional and behavioral self-regulation. Research has validated this to be a powerful method for decreasing a wide range of child emotional problems as well as for building self-esteem and more mature, pro-social behaviors. CCPT is based on eight clear-cut principles applied in a systematic way that equip the therapist with a method uniquely capable of handling the many challenges of playing therapeutically with children and achieving predictably positive results. This workshop is recommended for all clinicians who work with children as well as school counselors and child-welfare personnel.

• Describe how to establish rapport and a strong therapeutic relationship with the child
• Describe how to create the recommended therapeutic atmosphere to encourage the child to engage in self-exploration and engagement with his/her play environment and the therapist
• Describe how to facilitate the child's mastery of thoughts and feelings to help eliminate symptomatic behaviors
• Describe how to set and enforce limits in an effective and therapeutic way

Continuing Education Credit Hours

This organization (NCSSS, ACE#1424) is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Board (ASWB) www.aswb.org through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) Program. The (NCSSS) maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval period: (2.2.17 to 2.2.20). Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits. Social workers participating in this course will receive (6.0) Continuing Education clock hours.

All participants will receive Continuing Education Credit Hour Certificates in hand following completion of the workshop and the course evaluation. Participants must attend the complete workshop in person.
