Trauma Informing the 12 Steps: Empowerment in Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery

Surviving emotional, physical and/or sexual trauma has long been a part of the histories of many clients engaged in substance use disorder treatment services. In recent years the critical need for Trauma Informed Care has risen to widespread visibility through research, training & evidence based intervention models from SAMHSA and partnering agencies. 12 Step groups AA & NA are the most widespread and accessible peer support groups. This training provides an overview of broad definitions of trauma & the principles of trauma informed care, with supplemental 12 step language options to support client empowerment and prevent retraumatization.

Goal

Learn concrete knowledge & skills to assist trauma survivors in 12 step drug & alcohol recovery with language options that support their empowerment and prevent retraumatization.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Learn broad definitions of trauma including (DSM V, SAMHSA, ACES, Intersectional Oppression and more)
  2. Understand the relationship between unhealed trauma and the development of substance use disorders through a review of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study
  3. Learn the key principles of Trauma Informed Care
  4. Understand how some 12 step language may be contraindicated for survivors of trauma
