Jennifer Maxwell

Jennifer Maxwell is a Spanish professor and Director of the Spanish for Health Care Certificate and the Spanish for Health Professionals online Certificate program at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She teaches medical Spanish, cultural competency, interpreting and translating courses to undergraduate and graduate nursing, health science participants and health care professionals. She is also a medical translator and interpreter in the metropolitan DC area. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Spanish from Middlebury College and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the State University of New York at Oswego. Each year she directs a group of nursing and medical students, alumni, and health care professionals to volunteer their health care and Spanish language skills at the Roberto Clemente Clinic in Limon, Nicaragua.

Description

As the United States becomes a more racially and ethnically diverse nation, health care systems and providers need to respond to patients’ varied perspectives, values, and behaviors about health and well-being. Failure to understand and manage social and cultural differences may have significant health consequences for minority groups in particular. Cultural competence is one of the main components in closing the gap relating to disparities in health care. This 6-hour Cultural Competence and Diversity in Health Care workshop is designed to improve self-efficacy and communication skills when interacting with culturally diverse patients and families, as well as other health professionals. This workshop sets out to provide a framework for discussion and examples of practical approaches to cultural competence by evaluating current definitions of cultural competence and identify benefits to the health care system; identifying models of culturally competent care; determining key components of cultural competence and develop recommendations to implement culturally competent interventions and improve the sensitivity and awareness of health care professionals working with patients and family.

This workshop will be taught using a variety of methods with an emphasis on experiential learning: i.e. role-play, case analysis, cultural immersion activity, reflective observation, audio and video taping and viewing, readings, and oral assessments.

Continuing Education Credit Hours

This organization (NCSSS, ACE#1424) is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Board (ASWB) www.aswb.org through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) Program. The (NCSSS) maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval period: (2.2.17 to 2.2.20). Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits. Social workers participating in this course will receive (6.0) Continuing Education clock hours.

 All participants will receive Continuing Education Credit Hour Certificates in hand following completion of the workshop and the course evaluation. Participants must attend the complete workshop in person.
